Youthline is also looking for volunteer counsellors.

You may be in the process of training to become a counsellor and looking for a work placement or just interested in the work.

If you have no prior training, YouthLine hosts an intermediate Certificate course in Counselling Skills in conjunction with Richmond University the course is one day a week - 9.30am to 3.00pm for 16 weeks. Attending the course does not commit you to work at YouthLine.

Working as a counsellor at Youthline is dependant on you having passed a Certificate Course in Counselling Skills.

Can you show empathy, respect, genuine concern and warmth for young people?
Do you have a willingness to extend your knowledge and take part in training programmes and project work that YouthLine may offer you?

Requirements:

Volunteer counsellors must have reached a certificate level of education in counselling skills.
All visitors are required to submit their details for a Criminal Records Bureau Police Check
If selected for interview you will be required to submit a 50 minute long tape of yourself conducting a counselling session - this will be assessed by the YouthLine Counselling Co-ordinator and returned to you.
Volunteer counsellors are supported by the Counselling Co-ordinator but must take part in monthly supervision groups where they receive guidance from a professional therapist.
You must work within the guidelines for YouthLine set out by the Counselling Co-ordinator and also to the code of ethics of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy. YouthLine expects you to honour your commitment to YouthLine and the clients, taking a mature and professional approach to your work.

On receipt of your application you may be selected for an interview. If you are offered a placement at YouthLine you will be asked to attend a short induction at the centre and then work on reception for a brief period before counselling clients.

Seminars

Those studying Psychology and Counselling will find the seminars of great value, also adults working in various teaching and caring roles. Students above 16 years old are welcome. Please contact Youthline to book your place. Cost £5.00/seminar.

The lecturer Ralph Horton is an experienced Psychotherapist who regularly holds seminars at YouthLine.
